This poster exhibits 20th c. American illustrative Advertising graphic art and printing methods at its very best. The illustrative art work was done by Hazel Ives (American, 1888-1983), a portrait painter and well known Nantucket MA illustrator of the times. Her signature is printed on the poster on lower right under chair.
We found an article on Hazel Ives at the Nantucket Arts website here which reads: "Hazel Beauregard Ives was born in Derby, Connecticut in 1888. She
grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts and married Frederic Ives in 1910. Her only son, a Lieutenant in the U.S.Army Air Corps, was killed during
World War II. Hazel Beauregard Ives was a graduate of the
Museum School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She was a
cartographer during WWII, and in the '50s was a portraitist, and her
paintings of authors, politicians, and businessmen appeared on the cover
of the Atlantic Monthly. She later concentrated on charcoal
and pastel drawing and lived in Quoddy, Maine, and Cape Cod, where she
was a member of the Nauset Painters. Ives visited Nantucket often and befriended artist Elizabeth Saltonstall and other founding members of the AAN. She died in Mashpee, Massachusetts in 1983."
This poster was
published and distributed by the New England Dairy & Food Council, Printed in USA. The bottom line of text reads: "Suggestion: A space is left for the title to be added by teacher or pupils following a discussion of the picture."
This
