The Saturday Evening Post is an American magazine, started in 1897 and still in existence. It was monumental in its use of American illustrators on the famous covers, and exposing these designers and art to the American public, from Norman Rockwell, to John Falter to JC Leyendecker to NC Wyeth and many more.
This poster is by well known artist Stevan Dohanos, (1907-1994) of Lorain, Ohio. He was best known for these covers, and also his World War II propaganda posters.
The image is backstage at the Metropolitan Opera, during Act IV of Carmen. It features all the bustling backstage that goes on as the play unfolds. We see workers eating lunch, stage hands, actors, a young boy eating lunch, a conductor reading his score, lighting and electrical workers nonchalantly working as a singer brandishes a knife onstage in a critical scene. It is a beautiful American image. The colors are rich, lush and the art is Dohanos realism at its finest. This cover was entitled "Backstage at the Met."
An inset square reveals the content of the magazine, "Subway Sam Rosoff" by David G. Wittels and "What if we had Invaded Japan" by Philip Gustafson, Lieutenant Commander USNR.
We only have this one, although we are excited to present other Saturday Evening Post Posters as well. Freshly linen backed, beautiful and ready for framing. Amazing art.
