This 1896 poster celebrates a new book just out called “On Snow Shoes to the Barren Grounds: Twenty-eight hundred miles after musk-oxen and wood-bison” by Caspar W. Whitney. This is a hunting, northwest territories book, which can be read in full in online searches.
This poster would be hung to celebrate this new literary work, and Penfield was hired as the artist. Harper’s Magazine was first created in June 1850 by the book publishing firm Harper & Brothers. The earliest issues consisted largely of British material and soon after the magazine printed the work of American artists and writers.
One of those artists was Edward Penfield, well known designer of this poster. Penfield was born 1866 and died in 1925. In 1893-4 he produced a series of monthly images for Harper`s magazine. His style was influenced by Japanese prints, hand-craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts movement, and the impressionistic approach of Parisian poster making. A beautiful old piece! The poster is archivally linen backed and ready for framing. We only have this one.
Size: 11.5 × 18 inches
