CONDITION: B, Linen Mounted, minor creasing and minor border tears.
NOTE: The General Dynamics incorporated in 1953 and helped run ten different
manufacturing firms (among them, Electric Boat, Canada air Limited, Electro Dynamic,
General Atomic, Convair, and Stromberg-Carlson). This poster is for General Atomic.
At that time each company was administering defense needs of the United States. Some
of their products were atomic powered submarines, electric motors for destroyers, the B-58
supersonic jet bomber and the commercial 880 jet transport. General Dynamics was also working
in the areas of electronics, astronautics, aero and hydrodynamics, and nuclear physics.
NOTE: Eric Nitsche, the designer of this modern design sixties poster, worked for The General Dynamic Corp.
from 1955-1965, Nitsche set out to design six (35 x 50 inch) modern posters. The posters are a graphic
interpretation to promote peaceful uses for the atom. Each poster in the series was printed in Switzerland,
and done in different languages to appeal to many areas. Uncommon, beautiful moderne or modern

NOTE: A new graphic design style emerged in Switzerland in the 1950s that would
become the predominant moderne graphic style in the world by the ‘70s. The poster advertises
the Austrian Vienna Festival, a music festival on May 29-June 20, 1954. Its background color is
dark navy blue and it has a very avant garde, contemporary feel to it for the retro fifties time period.
Because of its strong reliance on typographic elements, the new style came to be known as the Basel School,
named for a group of graphic designers that worked in Basel, such as Armin Hofmann, Mangold, Stoecklin,
Leupin and Weingart and their students. The small city of Basel in northern Switzerland is home to many
facets of Swiss Poster design. Armin Hofmann is a Swiss graphic designer. With Emil Ruder, Hoffman
helped to found the Basel School and a graphic style known as the Swiss Style, and well known for his poster art.
His posters have been widely exhibited as works of art in major galleries, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art.
In 1965 he wrote the Graphic Design Manual.The poster is in excellent A condition, linen mounted. Beautiful and ready for framing!

NOTE: This poster advertises a Danish subscription edition of the complete
works of Norwegian author Alexander Kielland.
Translation: "All the works of Kielland for 15 kroner. 30 issues 50 ore [apiece].
Guaranteed against exceeding the price. Gyldendalske Boghandel"
(the name of the publishing house) It was common at the time to
purchase larger book sets through subscription, where each issue was
only part of a book. The publisher would print a few sheets at a time,
which were folded in eights (each sheet constituting 16 pages of a book)
and bound in a disposable paper cover. At the end of the subscription
period the subscriber would bring the set of "booklets" to a book binder and
have them properly combined into actual volumes and hardbound. The cost
of this last procedure was already covered by the subscription payments.
So the 30 issues advertised here may have resulted in a 4 or 6 volume set,
depending on how they were designed by the publisher. The poster reinforces
the publisher's guarantee against price increases during the subscription period.
The cost of the set, 15 kroner, corresponds to $2.50 in today's currency.
