Harper’s Magazine was first created in June 1850 by the book publishing firm Harper & Brothers. The earliest issues consisted largely of British material and soon after, the magazine printed the work of American artists and writers. One of those artists was Edward Penfield, well known designer of this poster. Penfield was born 1866 and died in1925. In 1894 he produced a series of monthly images for Harper`s magazine. His style was influenced by Japanese prints, hand-craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts movement, and the impressionistic approach of Parisian poster making. His signature is not printed on this sports poster, although it is a wonderful example of his work. In 1894 Harper’s Young People, a magazine for young people, was changed to Harper’s Round Table.
This poster depicts an early vintage bicycle, a pole vaulter or jumper and an emphasis on interscholastic sports, 1890’s Victorian style! The poster is archivally linen backed and ready for framing. We only have this one.
