This original poster, like many WW1 posters, shows how figurative drawing played an important role in the graphic design culture of the era. The graphic artist remains anonymous.
We see a young American sailor waving a navy signal flag, the text reads; “He is getting our country`s signal, ARE YOU? JOIN THE NAVY.” What makes this poster interesting is that blocked printed in the yellow area, we see the words stamped “Musicians Wanted” just beneath the sailors elbow. Again we see block printed above his shoulder the words “US Navy Recruiting Station, 1022 Gates Ave. Near Broadway, Bklyn NY” It was stamped after the poster was printed, and made for a specific need and a specific Brooklyn NY audience of the time. This also tells us exactly where this poster was used and displayed. A great old NYC and Brooklyn History piece. The poster is archivally linen backed and ready for framing. We only have this one.
