1897 Harper's Edward Penfield Antique Media Poster

Harper’s Magazine was first created in June 1850, by the book publishing firm Harper & Brothers. The earliest issues consisted largely of material from Britain and then highlighted the work of American artists and writers. Edward Penfield the designer of this poster. His signature varies throughout time and can be seen here printed in the plate at the top right of the poster. Penfield was born 1866 and died in 1925. In 1894 he produced a series of monthly images for Harper`s magazine. His style was influenced by Japanese prints, the the hand-craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts movement, and the impressionistic style of Parisian poster-making. This poster is a wonderful example of American culture. 

To give you an example of what was included in 1897 January issue of Harper Magazine this poster advertises some of the the topics, "The January number contains White man`s Africa, by Poultney Bigelow, The Martian by Du Maurier, Farce by W.D. Howells. Short stories, by Miss Wilkins, Brander Mathews, and E.A. Alexander, Science at the beginning of the Century, Illustrated Literary Landmarks of Rome by Laurence Hutton, etc. It depicts a beautiful litho image of an 1897 man reading books by electricity, an early Thomas Edison electric lamp or  light. A wonderful signed library piece. We only have this one.
