The Saturday Evening Post is a American magazine, started in 1897 and still in existence. It was monumental in its use of American illustrators on the famous covers, and exposing these designers and art to the American public, from Norman Rockwell, to John Falter, to JC Leyendecker to NC Wyeth and many more.
This poster is by well known artist John Carlton Atherton (1900-1952), an American illustrator and commercial artist. He was born in Brainard, Minnesota in 1900. In 1920 he relocated to San Francisco and attented College of The Pacific as well as The California School of Fine Arts (now known as The San Francisco Art Institute.) He worked with General Motors, Shell Oil, Container Corporation of America and Dole.
The image is a stunning scene of the "Tom Greene", built in 1923 and owned by the Greene Line of Cincinnati, Ohio. The "Tom Greene" was in the Cincinnati-Louisville trade until 1947, until later made into a landing boat and offices. Gordon C. Greene named his paddlewheeler boat after his son, Captain Tom Greene. There was also a boat named the "Gordon C. Greene" and the "Chris Greene" also namesakes of another son. Mary B. Greene, wife and mother of the above, commanded many boats also. Captain Tom Greene was responsible for bringing the "Delta Queen" to the Ohio River. His wife, Letha Greene, took over as president of the Delta Queen Steamboat Company upon his death. The Madison Milton Bridge was built in 1928 and can be seen overhead. This Cover is entitled "Paddlewheeler on Ohio River" by the Saturday Evening Post.
