Broadside History of the town of Marshfield, MA:

Green Harbor Marshes

Age: dated 1873
Condition: See photos, an original early letterpress broadside poster sign
Printed by: Journal Press, Hingham, Massachusetts

This is a great old original antique broadside advertising sign printed to alert the citizens of the Town of Marshfield MA about recent assessments of the dykes or dyking of Green Harbor Marshes. Marshfield is in Plymouth County, on Massachusetts's South Shore. It was named after the many salt marshes which border the town. The poster asks citizens if they are opposed to the dyking, to meet at the Agricultural Hall in Marshfield on Saturday September 13, 1873 at 11 o'clock to decide upon further action.

This is an early American original broadside poster boldly printed in beautiful early letterpress. It is cut pieces of text glued onto early paper. We believe it to have been removed from an early Marshfield area scrapbook or journal / diary, as the reverse has other Marshfield ephemera printed on it, and it is in 2 separate pages. There are quaint articles cut from the news on the death of a valuable horse, coal in the country of Greenland, a poem called "Hope" by Carl Spencer, and the best part, articles on the Green Harbor Marshes.

Printed text there speaks of a Supreme court hearing by Judge Devens brought by John H. Dingley against Clements Herschel and the commissioners of the Green Harbor Marshes. It was over the building of a dyke over Green Harbor River. It has parts of an antique letterhead from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Harbor Commission office about the dam and dikes to drain area near Turkey Point, Marshfield. It is ready for framing, and would be wonderful in a 2 sided glass frame to show both sides. A great historical one of a kind piece.

Size: 18 x 5.5 inches
