Elisha Brown Bird was a well known American illustrator of bookplates and magazines during the 1890’s. He was known for his Art Nouveau style as seen here in this poster, which was designed for a promotional for "The Century" magazine. The Century Magazine was a monthly popular magazine published in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Century Magazine began publication in 1881, as a successor to Scribner’s Monthly Magazine. It ceased publication in 1930.
The small print states articles in the magazine about Elder Dumas by Emily Crawford, Paris Correspondance of the London Daily News and The New York Tribune, John Randolph of Roanoke, Ways and Means in Arid America by W.E. Smythe, Sir George Tressady by Mrs Humphry Ward, Stamping out the London Slums, On the Track of the Arkansas Traveler, Life at Napoleon’s Court by Prof. Wm M Sloane. Other contributors are Stedman, Harrison, Woodrow Wilson, Hamilton, Vibert and many others. In very small print “Sold here price 35 cents published by The Century Co. New York.” This Victorian era poster is a wonderful piece of American Literary History. The poster is archivally linen backed and ready for framing. We only have this one.
