The signature printed in the printers plate of this smaller poster for Inland printer is of JC Leyendecker, a well known American illustrator. Joseph Christian Leyendecker was born in 1874 in Germany and emigrated with his parents and younger brother Frank, to America in 1882. He was part of the generation that included Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg, Maxfield Parrish, and Aubrey Beardsley. Leyendecker enjoyed a long and famous career.
This poster was designed in JC's early years as a designer. In 1896 he won a Century Magazine cover competition that brought his work to international notice. This led to cover assignments to other national magazines. He did all twelve of Inland Printers’ covers for the year of 1897. This poster represents the Art Nouveau style. Art Nouveau in French means “The New Art” developed in the the 1890-1920 era.
Much has been written about Leyendecker and we are fortunate to have a few of his posters. He also designed WW1 posters. This is an original beauty! We only have this one.
