Age: c. 1900 lithograph
Condition: A condition, 2 sided thick board, see photos.
This is a beautiful old original litho cigar & tobacco piece, 2 sided with red tag for display in an early general store or tobacciana shop. It was printed by the George Schlegel Lithographic Co. 1849-1957, a New York printing company well known for its labels and designs for cigars and cigar boxes. Four generations of German immigrants owned the Schlegel company in its long lifetime.
The sign features a very well done likeness of Andrew Gregg Curtin 1817-1894. Curtin was a lawyer and politician, and the 15th Governor of Pennsylvania during the American Civil war. He was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln's, and worked extensively behind the scenes at the battle of Gettysburg. After the battle, he was instrumental in the creation of the Gettysburg Cemetery, and procured Abraham Lincoln speaking at the opening of the cemetery, reciting his famous Gettysburg Address. Curtin had a long career and was a personality in good standing to have a cigar named after him after his death in 1894.
This is a beautiful original historical cigar piece, a horizontal oval in stone lithography with gold inks. Beautiful and ready for framing.
