CONDITION: A, Linen Mounted
This stunning and very rare 1938 poster for the 1939 NY World's Fair was printed with silver inks on the building, flag poles, and stars. Hitler invaded Poland before the fair opened, and Poland sadly withdrew from the Fair.
From Wiki NYWF article: "Countries under the thumb of the Axis powers in Europe, e.g., Poland, Czechoslovakia, and France, ran their pavilions in 1940 with a special nationalistic pride. The only major world power that did not participate for the 1939 season was Germany, citing budget pressures; the Soviet Pavilion was dismantled after the first season. When the fair closed, many among the European staff were unable to return to their home countries, so they remained in America and in some cases exercised a tremendous influence on American culture. World War II presented additional problems with what to do with the exhibits on display in the pavilions of countries under Axis occupation. In the case of the Polish Pavilion, most of the items were sold by the Polish Government in exile in London to the Polish Museum of America and shipped to Chicago. A notable exception was made for a monument of the Polish-Lithuanian King Jagiełło which Mayor Fiorello La Guardia took such a liking to that he helped spearhead a campaign to have it installed in Central Park, where it still stands to this day."
A rare and uncommon example of a wonderful art deco, moderne, and machine age graphic era of American design. This poster was found in the early 1990's with 3 others in Buffalo, NY, which has a high Polish population, presumably from someone who worked at the fair. The others were sold, and this was in our personal collection until now. The poster is archivally linen backed and ready for framing. We only have this one.
