In 1941, the Museum of Modern Art sponsored a National Defense Poster Competition with the Army Air Corps and the Treasury Department. John Atherton won first prize in the Defense Bond category for this propaganda poster with photomontage elements, depicting hands shaking, one the hand of Uncle Sam. It has forties machine age art deco factory graphics behind. A very modern and fresh graphic design style for the times.
