The Saturday Evening Post is a American magazine, started in 1897 and still in existence. It was monumental in its use of American illustrators on the famous covers, and exposing these designers and art to the American public, from Norman Rockwell, to John Falter, to JC Leyendecker to NC Wyeth and many more.
This poster is by well known artist John Carlton Atherton (1900-1952), an American illustrator and commercial artist. He was born in Brainard, Minnesota in 1900. In 1920 he relocated to San Francisco and attented College of The Pacific as well as The California School of Fine Arts (now known as The San Francisco Art Institute.) He worked with General Motors, Shell Oil, Container Corporation of America and Dole.
The image is a stunning antique marblebust of Benjamin Franklin, with his famous 1780 quote on science and signature on old parchment paper. The colors are deep and rich hues of reds and brown and antique patina wood tones.
Franklin's Quote is, as follows: "The rapid progress true Science now makes, occasions my regretting sometimes that I was born too soon. It is impossible to imagine the height to which may be carried, in a thousand years, the power of man over matter. O that moral science were in as fair a way of improvement, that men would cease to be wolves to one another, and that human beings would at length learn what they now improperly call humanity!" signed, Ben Franklin 1780
An inset square reveals the content of the magazine, "What You Can Believe about MVA" by Wesley Price and "Canada's New Gold Boom" by Gordon Carroll.
We only have this one, although we are excited to present other Saturday Evening Post Posters as well. Freshly linen backed, beautiful and ready for framing. Amazing art. A most perfect gift for American history lovers.
